SAE International has published an article on its website highlighting the collaboration between UQM Technologies, Eaton and Dana to develop a full electric drivetrain system for the medium- and heavy-duty EV markets.
Eaton are developing and supplying a 2-speed transmission and Dana engineers are responsible for the transmission control unit integrated with UQM’s current PowerPhase HD220/HD250 motor and inverter system to create a full electric drivetrain system called the UQM PowerPhaseDT, which offers better packaging, efficiency, greater payload capacity and lower cost when compared with direct drive or single speed drivetrains.
The transmission control unit is an application-specific variant of the OpenECU M220 controller, with model-based controls developed by Dana’s systems engineering team. The M220 is being used on the prototype systems and will also be the controller for the PowerPhaseDT when it enters volume production in early 2017, demonstrating the benefit of the OpenECU product line – you develop your controls on the production hardware from the outset of the program.
Dana is proud to be involved in this project with UQM and Eaton, which further illustrates the wide variety of technology developments that are enabled by the capabilities of the Dana OpenECU products for both rapid controls prototyping and low-volume production.
